Stretching out low back muscles is the key to low back pain relief. If this was true, then people who are very flexible would not have this problem. In some instances, stretching can be harmful, such as having a low back disc bulge and thinking that bending forward while standing will loosen the tight muscles that are creating the problem. Bad move! This will not only tighten the muscles causing the problem but also put more pressure on the disc, causing more pain and possibly injuring it as well.
2. Once You Have It, It’ll Be Forever!
Once you have a back problem you will have it for the rest of your life. Proper care and treatment of joints and muscles can be wholly restorative. Of course, there are serious back conditions caused by birth and growth issues or trauma that may result in a lifelong problem, but the majority of people don’t fall into this category.
3. Surgery Is the Only Cure
Drugs and/or surgery are the only solution for getting rid of your pain. Unless you have some major underlying problem, drugs are not going to solve your problem. Surgery may be necessary, but other options should be pursued first.
4. Just Rest It
You just need to rest it. Resting may be necessary after a trauma—such as an auto collision or sports injury— to let damaged tissues heal, but if you wake up in the morning and your back hurts, didn’t you just rest it for six to eight hours? Will more of the same really make you better?
5. Muscle Relaxants and Pain Killers
You need to work through it with the help of muscle relaxants and pain pills. Using pills to kill pain is a guaranteed method for reinjuring your body. Why? An injured area no longer functions the same as an uninjured one. If you injure an area, then you have injured tissues that were necessary to stabilize a joint and supply support and strength. Once it has been injured, the damaged area can no longer provide that support. Pain is triggered to let you know to back off. If you ignore it, by deadening the pain and continuing to put stress into that joint, you may get benched permanently.
